Buildings That Work as Hard as You Do

Beartooth Fencing LLC is a licensed and insured general contractor based in Columbus, Montana. Fence is where we started, but most properties need more than a fence line: somewhere to park equipment, shelter for stock, a barn and arena for horses.

We build those structures with the same approach we bring to fence: plan around how the property actually gets used, build for Montana weather, and don't cut corners where nobody will see them. Snow load, wind exposure, and drainage get designed in before the first post goes in the ground.

Because we build fence too, we can plan buildings, paddocks, gates, and fence lines together, so the whole property flows instead of fitting pieces together after the fact.

Buildings We Build

Four Ways We Build on Your Property

From a single run-in shed to a full horse property, here's what we do.

Equestrian facility with barn, arena, and paddocks in the Beartooth region

Service

Equestrian Facility Design

A horse property works best when it's designed as one system. Where the barn sits decides how far you haul hay. Where the paddocks sit decides how you move horses. Where the arena sits decides whether it drains or turns to mud every spring.

We plan the full layout with you: barn, arena, paddocks, turnouts, lanes, gates, and fence. Then we build it. Because we do equine fence and gates ourselves, the whole facility comes from one plan and one crew.

  • Full-property layout for barns, arenas, paddocks, and turnouts
  • Traffic flow for horses, people, trailers, and hay delivery
  • Arena placement and perimeter fencing
  • Paddock and dry-lot layout with horse-safe fence
  • Drainage and footing planning around high-use areas
  • Phased build plans to fit your budget

Pole barn construction for equipment storage near Columbus, MT

Service

Pole Barns

Pole barns are the most cost-effective way to put a large, clear-span roof over equipment, hay, vehicles, or a shop. Posts set in the ground carry the load, which means less foundation work and faster construction than a conventional building.

We size trusses and posts for Montana snow load and wind, and lay out doors around the equipment that will actually use them. Whether you need an open-sided hay shed or a fully enclosed shop, we build it to hold up.

  • Equipment storage, hay barns, and machine sheds
  • Shops and enclosed workspace
  • Open-sided, three-sided, and fully enclosed designs
  • Overhead, sliding, and walk doors sized to your equipment
  • Steel roofing and siding in a range of colors
  • Engineered for regional snow load and wind

Livestock run-in shelter built for Montana weather

Service

Livestock Shelter

Stock need a place to get out of the wind, snow, and summer sun. A well-built shelter cuts winter stress, protects calves, and saves feed that animals would otherwise burn just staying warm.

We build run-in sheds and loafing shelters facing away from the prevailing wind, with enough depth and headroom for your animals and a layout that's easy to clean. Skid-mounted options can move with your grazing rotation.

  • Run-in sheds for horses and cattle
  • Loafing sheds and calving shelters
  • Openings oriented away from prevailing wind
  • Skid-mounted portable shelters
  • Kick boards and stock-safe interior finish
  • Tie-ins to existing corrals and fence lines

General ranch construction project in the Beartooth region of Montana

Service

General Construction

Not every job fits a category. Ranches and acreage properties always have projects that need a capable crew: a lean-to on an existing barn, a hay yard, a deck, a repair after a storm.

As a licensed general contractor, we take on the projects that fall between the specialties. If it's on a ranch or acreage property and it needs building, call us and we'll talk it through.

  • Additions and lean-tos on existing buildings
  • Hay yards, feed bunks, and windbreaks
  • Structural repairs after storm or snow damage
  • Decks, porches, and outdoor structures
  • Site prep and layout for new construction
  • Custom one-off ranch projects

How It Works

Our Building Process

Six steps from your first call to a finished building.

1

Free On-Site Visit

We walk the site with you: access, slope, drainage, utilities, wind exposure, and how you'll actually use the building.

2

Design & Written Quote

You get a building design with size, layout, materials, and doors spelled out, along with a written quote. Free, and no obligation.

3

Planning & Permits

We confirm setbacks, check whether a building permit applies where you are, and call in utility locates.

4

Site Prep

The building pad gets cleared, leveled, and graded for drainage so water moves away from the structure.

5

Framing & Roof

Posts go in, trusses go up, and the roof and walls get closed in, built to the snow and wind loads for your site.

6

Finish & Walk-Through

Doors, trim, and any interior work get finished, the site gets cleaned up, and we walk the building with you.

Planning Your Building

Getting the Design Right

The best time to fix a building is before it's built. These are the decisions that matter most.

Things to Decide Early

These shape everything else:

  • What the building will hold, now and in ten years
  • The largest piece of equipment that needs to fit
  • Open, three-sided, or fully enclosed
  • Where power and water need to go
  • How the building ties into fence, gates, and lanes
  • Whether you'll phase the project over time

Common Building Mistakes

Most problems we're called to fix trace back to one of these:

  • Undersized trusses that can't carry a heavy snow year
  • Doors too small for the next tractor
  • Shelter openings facing straight into the wind
  • Building in a low spot that floods every spring
  • No room left to expand
  • Barn, arena, and paddocks laid out with no plan for traffic

Cost & Planning

What Drives Building Cost

Every building is different, so we don't publish square-foot prices. Here's what actually moves the number.

What Changes Your Quote

These are the variables we look at on site:

  • Building size, height, and clear span
  • Open, three-sided, or enclosed design
  • Door count, type, and size
  • Roofing and siding materials
  • Site prep, grading, and drainage
  • Concrete floors, power, and interior finish

Building Planning Checklist

Have these answers ready and your quote gets faster:

  • What will the building store or shelter?
  • Rough size you have in mind
  • Where on the property, and is the site level?
  • Power and water needs
  • Covenants, setbacks, or permit requirements
  • Your target window

Building Maintenance

Cheap habits that add years to a building:

  • Clear heavy snow off roofs in big storms
  • Check fasteners and trim each spring
  • Keep drainage paths open around the building
  • Watch for post rot at the ground line
  • Service overhead doors yearly
  • Keep stock from chewing exposed wood

Questions

Custom Building FAQs

The questions we get asked most often, answered straight.

How much does a pole barn cost in Montana?

Cost depends on size, height, enclosure, doors, materials, and site prep. An open-sided hay shed costs much less per square foot than a fully enclosed, insulated shop.

We give you a written quote for free after walking the site.

Do I need a building permit for a pole barn or shelter?

Agricultural buildings on rural acreage often have fewer permit requirements, but rules vary by county, subdivision, and building use. We'll tell you what we know about your area and point you to the right office before we build.

How long does it take to build a pole barn?

A small run-in shed can take a few days. A larger pole barn or shop usually takes a few weeks, depending on size, weather, and site prep. We give you a realistic schedule with your quote.

Which way should a livestock shelter face?

In most of the Beartooth region, the open side should face away from the prevailing wind, usually south or east. We look at your site's exposure and terrain before deciding.

Can you design a full horse property from scratch?

Yes. We plan the barn, arena, paddocks, turnouts, lanes, gates, and fence as one layout, then build it. Phasing the project over a few seasons is common and we'll plan for that.

Do you build portable livestock shelters?

Yes. Skid-mounted shelters can be moved with a tractor as your grazing rotation changes. They're a good fit for leased ground or rotational systems.

Can you build in the winter?

Some work can continue through winter, but frozen ground slows post setting and concrete. We'll tell you honestly whether your project should start now or wait for spring.
